Experience First Celebrity Travel Couple

Traveling with someone you truly love is stimulating for it can be romantic and thrilling. Question is how well do you know your partner?

Does your partner enjoy the sun or simply want to watch the sunset while listening to a fave playlist? Does your partner love the water even if he/she doesn’t know how to swim? Is your partner fit enough to do the activities you like?

These are just some of the few questions you need to consider when you travel with your special someone.

To avoid any unnecessary squabble, somebody has to scrutinize and contemplate.

Just recently, the Experience Travel and Living team was fortunate enough to sit down with real-life celebrity couple, Richard and Maricar Reyes-Poon for an exclusive interview. Together, they shared with us how they prepare before they travel, and even revealed some tips and secrets before and when traveling as a married couple.

ETL: Do you prefer destinations where you can stay connected? Which gadgets are the most important when you travel?

Maricar:Yes. I would choose to have mobile wi-fi. This is available particularly in Japan when we went there. It’s cheaper than getting roaming and very cost effective. You just order it on-line. I paid through credit card and then they’ll deliver it to your hotel. It’s cool because they say up to 10 devices can connect to this thing. Grabe, galing, ang bilis (It was great and so fast)!

ETL: Who usually does the Internet browsing when preparing to travel?

Maricar:I do the browsing beforehand. Matagal, lalo na yung first trip namin sa Japan (it took a long time, especially for our first trip to Japan). I Google on how to get from the plane to the hotel considering na wala masyado nag e-english (not too many speak in English) and you can’t read the signs and you have to figure it out. So you really have to do your research.

ETL: What’s your favorite activity?

Maricar:Eating (Laughs). If there’s anything that’s constant wherever we go, that’s trying the food and then walking in the streets at night. Yun talaga ang favorite namin (that’s really our favorite).

Richard:Swimming (points to Maricar) kung may tubig (if there’s water). (Laughs)

ETL:Maricar, what are the top must-haves in your list when you travel?

Maricar:That would be tissue, moisturizer/sunblock and mascara.

ETL:Richard, do you have your own playlist of your favorite songs when you travel?

Richard:Sorry I don’t have. When I’m traveling I don’t, unless I have work, I do vocal exercises. Also, in Japan I don’t need a playlist because they have beautiful music there. Even the music in McDonald’s is Jazz and I love their anime music, too. It’s so energetic and positive. Alam mo yun? Pag nasa building ka ng (You know? If you’re in a building full of) anime it’s like, wow ang sarap (feels great)!

ETL: Do you have any travel tips for all the couples out there?

Maricar: Relax. Because I try really hard to do the best of everything knowing that my husband is a little bit on the O.C. (Obsessive-Compulsive) side, right? Eh minsan pumapalya talaga eh (sometimes you really fail). You will make mistakes. And every time I make mistakes, I’m like, I’m so bad and I feel really bad.

But then, he says “relax ka lang, ganon talaga kung nagkamali e di ayusin (just relax, it’s normal. If you make a mistake, just fix it).

So there, when you travel there are things that you don’t find in the internet. You can probably make mistakes so just be prepared with the right finances and positive outlook that you can solve it.

Richard: First, you have to know your partner well. Like me, I know how she reacts, especially when traveling to a cold place. But during our first trip overseas, of course, I didn’t know that, right? (Laughs). I saw it when we visited Hong Kong and it was like negative 7 degrees. I saw that she was reacting to the cold weather. For me, I like cold climates, especially walking in cold weather rather than warm. But I realized that although she enjoys the cold, she can’t stand it too much unlike me. So I need to think of her because you know what you want for yourself but sometimes what you like may not be comfortable to the other so you really need to adjust.

I also got this tip from a wise individual. He said that if you have the money to spend, he believes we should prioritize travel more than material stuff. He said, “Invest in memories more than material things.”

ETL: Do you guys still do solo traveling considering you’re married already?

Maricar: Not yet. We’ve only been married for two years. As much as possible we’d like to spend time with each other so we can’t do that if we do solo travels.

Richard:We have this weird family rule. We don’t want to be away from each other for more than 5 days. If I’ll travel and I’ll be away from her for more than 5 days, I have to bring her with me already.
